a new space to meet

HOLMES CHAPEL HIGH SCHOOL

Introduction

Land Studio were appointed to design a multi-functional entrance landscape at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School & Sixth Form College in Cheshire. The school wanted to create an attractive outdoor covered communal area for their students to gather and socialise throughout the year. We went back to the drawing board and turned what was an out of date, dull space into a flowing, terraced outdoor social space with bench seating at different levels – and accessible to all. By popping a canopy over the top, students can use it all year round, whatever the weather.

The space, which we have recently completed, also functions as a key arrival point and successfully creates connections with the school’s other outdoor spaces, improving overall wayfinding throughout the site.

In response to covid-19, we’re working with an increasing number of schools across the country who need external spaces to be more efficiently designed to accommodate small and medium size groups of students throughout the year.
