Gardens of Remembrance and Natural Burial

POWYS CREMATORIUM

Introduction

In 2020 we were commissioned to undertake landscape design work for Powys Crematorium in Powys, mid Wales. We are working on the project alongside Western Design Architects in Dorset and drainage experts Ceri Environment Consulting in Newtown.

We have been looking at how we can design the crematorium, burial ground and gardens of remembrance to take advantage of the existing topography and, importantly, the views out over the Caersws Basin.

We have considered how the buildings and arrival sequence for visitors needs to be best orientated to manage the prevailing wind from the west and we have explored the meaning of remembrance and its significance to the people of Powys with a specific focus on the landscape. We have used the character of the landscape – from its hedgerows and woodland to the use of water, stone, timber and brick - to inform the design of the gardens to evoke memories of the people that have lived there and throughout mid-Wales.

In everything we do we work with the natural environment to enhance the natural features of a site and sensitively integrate new elements of infrastructure into it.
