Landscape design for London school

Now more than ever our schools need treasured outdoor space.

The Land Studio team have developed a landscape masterplan for London school, Eden Girls School, Waltham Forest in Walthamstow.

Our plan covers the whole site, but can be implemented in zones as and when funds become available.

The main design objective is to improve the condition, functionality and quality of the external realm, creating a landscape which reflects the quality and aspirations of the faith-based secondary school for girls and Star Academies.

Star Academies is one of the country’s leading education providers and runs a diverse network of primary and secondary schools.

Following a number of consultations and site visits last year, we have designed a landscape which incorporates the principles of Islamic garden design to create a green oasis, which is also a safe, creative and inspiring environment for learning.

We have considered how we can improve the environmental quality for the children to lessen the negative impacts of the microclimate. We have provided green walkways, space and shelter with climbing plants and utilised sustainable surface drainage to tackle the summer smells of the nearby reservoir and recycling plant.

New hedges will be planted to create soft edges between pedestrian and vehicular routes, while new trees will screen and soften the northern boundary. A new water feature will become a focal point with planting and a courtyard garden will provide informal play spaces. Rows of parking will be broken up with new planting beds and the entrance plaza will be transformed into a welcoming school entrance.

We’re very excited to work on this project and to hear feedback from the school and its pupils.
