Land Studio was commissioned by Bridgend County Borough Council to develop a comprehensive Green Masterplan for Newcastle Higher Community Council and Cornelly Community Council. This strategic study sets out a clear, future‑focused vision for enhancing the quality, quantity, accessibility and performance of green spaces across the areas both now and for generations to come.

The Masterplan provides a robust evidence base to support local communities and decision‑makers, helping to inform resilience planning and guide investment in green infrastructure. It explores how green spaces can deliver multiple benefits, from wellbeing and biodiversity to climate adaptation and sustainable transport.

Our assessment brought together a wide range of environmental, social and cultural considerations, including transport and access routes, topography, hydrology and flood risk, geology, biodiversity, demographics, local heritage, health and deprivation, and connectivity for both people and nature. The study mapped existing green assets such as ecological corridors, public open spaces, formal gardens and multifunctional green routes, including those that already support active travel.

Central to the project was meaningful community engagement. Land Studio worked closely with Bridgend County Borough Council to deliver an inclusive programme of public consultation, including face‑to‑face meetings, public events and online questionnaires. This process ensured local knowledge and priorities directly shaped the Masterplan, identifying opportunities for new or enhanced green spaces, as well as areas in need of regeneration.

The study concludes with a series of clear, actionable recommendations, outlining options for further investigation, potential improvement projects and practical next steps. Together, these provide a strong platform for delivering greener, healthier and more resilient communities.
