We have been working on a sensitive and historic site in Bangor, North Wales, which has recently gained planning approval.

Land Studio was invited to look at the landscape design for this historic parcel of land, which encapsulates centuries of industrial heritage and now stands at the heart of a new chapter for Bangor’s future. We also carried out a Flood Consequence Assessment (FCA).

Cae Incline Fields at Llandygai is close to Penrhyn Castle in Bangor and the site lies within a Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest and adjacent to the Scheduled Ancient Monument of the Penrhyn Quarry Railway, part of a World Heritage Site.

The land at Cae Incline Fields had been specifically allocated for housing and has recently won approval for 48 homes that would be 100% affordable.

The scheme has been designed by Ainsley Gommon Architects for Williams Homes (Bala). Axis advised on planning for the project, which is now on course for development on the site off the A5. Social housing provider Adra is on board as partner.

As part of the planning process, greater emphasis has been put on landscape-led design.

The approved plans envision a mix of houses and apartments designed to be sensitive to the landscape and adjacent heritage assets. As part of the planning process, greater emphasis has been placed on:

  • Heritage integration: Green spaces and interpretive paths will preserve the setting of the Incline Plane and enhance public understanding of the site’s industrial past.
  • Landscape-led design: Open space corridors and tree planting will create a verdant buffer around the development, reflecting the site’s semi-rural edge-of-city character.
  • Flood resilience and biodiversity: A north-facing attenuation basin, native planting, bird and bat boxes, and the retention of hedgerows will support climate resilience and enhance ecological value.
  • Transport connectivity: Located along the A5 with an adjacent bus stop and close to National Cycle Route 5, the site promotes low-carbon mobility and is within walking distance of local schools, parks, and community facilities.

We were really impressed with Land Studio. They are creative, a delight to work with and captured our vision and their own vision perfectly.
