Land Studio were part of the team for the design of the new Llyn y Forwyn Welsh-medium primary school in partnership with Wynne Construction, Rhondda Cynon Taf CBC as part of the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
For the school in South Wales, we designed a planting strategy inspired by the RCT Action for Nature Plan, which champions local biodiversity and reinforces the existing landscape character of the valley.
Our design aimed to enhance the use of the outdoor spaces for the children, with a strong emphasis on improving the site’s ecology.
Our design created habitats that would attract hedgehogs, bats, and birds, providing opportunities for the children to learn, explore and play in a natural environment.
Rain gardens, new pond features, new grassland and meadow habitats with bug towers were also specified to help with water management across the site.
We also ran workshops with the children, encouraging them to engage in the design process and inspiring them to become future environmental ambassadors. The outdoor spaces were thoughtfully designed to foster a deep connection between the children and the natural world, ensuring a lasting impact on both the environment and the community.
The integration of SuDS was key to get surface water management integrated into the landscape design utilising the SuDS features as areas of play and for teaching opportunities.

We were really impressed with Land Studio. They are creative, a delight to work with and captured our vision and their own vision perfectly.
