The castle is a Grade I listed building and has been home to the Strickland family for over 800 years.

One of our first projects at Sizergh Castle was to improve the visitor experience and we were commissioned to redesign the arrival space and enhance the site’s accessibility and aesthetics.

This project focused on creating an attractive, legible entrance and included a new play area to engage families. Key improvements involved better path networks with consistent gradients and materials, widening paths, and introducing a central spine path to connect key areas. Terracing and strategic tree planting were also implemented to manage slopes, enhance the landscape, and improve biodiversity.

These enhancements aimed to create a more welcoming and enjoyable environment, deepening visitors’ connection to the estate’s natural and historical elements while ensuring a safe and accessible experience for all.
We’re currently looking at how we can improve accessibility across the castle gardens to make the whole site more inclusive and user friendly in all the seasons.

There are several historic features that could be better connected to enhance the visitor experience, including an orchard with its 65 varieties of apple trees, the mirror pond and the splendid yew topiary walk.

We were really impressed with Land Studio. They are creative, a delight to work with and captured our vision and their own vision perfectly.
