Hilltop, Near Sawrey

Hill Top is one of the National Trust’s most visited properties, drawing thousands of visitors each year to the former home of Beatrix Potter in the Lake District.

Land Studio was commissioned to review the existing car park and visitor arrival experience, which had grown organically over time and no longer reflected the quality expected at a site of this significance.

Our design study identified key issues with vehicle circulation, pedestrian safety, and the visibility of the ticketing facilities. The result was a reconfigured car park layout that improved both capacity and flow, with clear sightlines to the ticket building from the point of arrival.

A new, dedicated pedestrian path was introduced to separate visitors from vehicles, providing a safe and considered route into the village and onward to Beatrix Potter’s farmhouse, creating an arrival experience worthy of this much-loved landscape.
